Chambersburg Pike
The Confederates ran into the Union at Chambersberg Pike on July 1, 1863, trying to get to Gettysburg to get shoes for the Army. Both sides sent for more troops which arrived later that night. As infantry reinforcements arrived under Major General John F. Reynolds of the Union I troops, the Confederate assults down the Chambersburg Pike were repulsed. Although General Reynolds was killed. By 4 p.m., both federal corps were in retreat to Cemetary Hill. The Union was losing thousands of men. More than the Confederates. The Confederates ended up winning that day, but the Union was going to make a big comeback.
